Adam Carnaby.
Based on the west coast of Sweden, British artist Adam Carnaby has been creating art for over forty years. His inspiration comes from the brilliant light on the west coast of Sweden and the constantly unfolding drama of the seas and skies. Painting mainly with acrylics, pigment and inks, his work also incorporates found items from scavenging trips along the coast.
Adam's work rather than being a direct translation of the land and seascape close to his home and studio, is more complex and layered. Using deep natural colours with a wet on wet technique on the raw canvas, his work evolves organically with layers of wash, translucent in places with subtle mark making. "I often start with a variety of images in my subconscious and a palette range I want to work with, which has been inspired by being in the coastal environment or sometimes simply how I'm feeling or were my mind is at in that particular moment. Usually, within the first few brush strokes, something else happens, particularly when working with a wet canvas. It's then a matter of reacting to these changes in the moment".
The work has a raw natural quality and strong contemporary feel. But at the same time is powerfully evocative and timeless. Adam has a visual language with mark making and broad saturations of colour, implying meaning and feeling that suggests an overlap of past and present, with the ultimate focus of creating a liminal space for the viewer.
